Why you should be eating right and taking vitamins when pregnant! I just want to share my story on why it is so important to eat good and take prenatal and iron supplements while pregnant. I am 6 1/2 months pregnant right now and never realized how much a baby sucks out of you (since this is my first pregnancy) I thought I had been eating ok and I know my prenatal vitamin intake could've been better (I would either forget to take them, or just not think about it)
Early Sunday morning I could've killed myself and the baby, as I barely pulled over to the side of the road and passed out, waking up to vomit all over myself with my cell phone in my hand and 9-1-1 on the other line (I dont remember making the call, but I magically did) I was rushed to the hospital where I was told I was severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion. Not knowing what was happening or how my baby was coping with this trauma, I sat at the hospital for 10 1/2 hours getting two bags of blood transfered into my body.. the cause of this... not eating enough iron enriched foods and skimping on my prenatal vitamins. The lack of oxygen in my blood caused me to pass out in my vehicle on a major highway, and if I didnt have the sense to pull over, it could've been worse. Although the risks are low, blood transfusions are a scary thing.. not getting the right blood could lead to death, I could contract HIV or Hepatitis (1 in a million chance, but still a chance) This has been an extremely important lesson, and though some people can get away with not taking their vitamins, its not a chance worth taking ever again in my eyes.
So please, if you ever think you dont need them, think about how I felt, waking up not knowing where I am, going into carpoltunnel shock (I think thats what it was called) and not being able to move your hands or feet, having needles poked into you all day long, sitting for hours as someone elses blood gets slowly transfered into your body and being hooked up to a fetal heart monitor and not knowing whether the trauma will lead to premature labor. Id rather take the two seconds to pop a few pills then go through that again!
