A friend of mine was telling me that for a first date he really likes to impress the lady, especially if it is someone that he is very interested in. I was trying to tell him that sometimes fancy dates are not all the great. Yeah, you get dressed up and go to a really nice restaurant. I would much rather has a date with a guy that I can just be me. Yes I can get dressed up and look pretty darn awesome...but the everyday me would rather do something more casual. That does not mean that I am going to show up in ragged shorts and a baggy T-shirt.

For a first date, .casual, even to the point of spontaneous. The worst dates are those with all the hype and fantasy before even finding out if there is chemistry. The overt displays and trappings of romance are completely inappropriate if you don't even know if you like the person.

And from a personal perspective, romance is something that emanates from the soul. I don't need to arrange a sequence of events including lots of money being spent and pressure on both in order to communicate my feelings...I let my feelings communicate my feelings

The best first dates, are cheap, fun and last less than an hour. Of course, when I really like the person...I'll end the first date (and yes, I actually tell her the first date is now ending) and immediately ask her out on a second date where we may head off to share a drink and an appetizer or such. To me, the best first dates end quickly...so we can get on to the second and third dates, but still, spontaneous and fun are the key words.
