I had the same problem, but I've been using Sally Hansen Age Correct Strength Dry+Brittle Nail Care. I've been wearing it by itself and my toenails look so much better now. I'm not sure if it would be as beneficial as a basecoat, but the back of the bottle says it works as one. I know it works great and looks good by itself.
